Colombia's Leader Declares 'I Will Take Up Arms Once More' if US Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have turned up the volume in their verbal conflict, heightening strains bilaterally following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has narcotics facilities and production sites and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Growing Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Talking to the press over the weekend, the US president hinted at similar military action against Colombia, stating Colombia is “very sick too” and led by an unwell individual who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

Colombia has long been a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign against narcotics trade and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, yet ties have soured dramatically following Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom demobilised after a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Strong Answer

In response to a query whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the 1990s, firmly denied the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he stated.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will turn into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. If they capture me, which a large part of the population loves and respects, they will release the fierce spirit of the people," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed part of his youth belonging with the radical M-19 armed organization though it is believed he did not took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he participated in writing a new constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up weapons once more," he said.

Heightened Measures and Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the possibility of a US attack against their nation.

Political and Financial Strains

Washington revoked the president's entry visa after he encouraged US military personnel to ignore any illegal orders. Later, in October, it placed economic restrictions on Petro, his spouse and various associates.

Simultaneously the US was building up its troop levels in the region and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations on boats off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
