Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
