Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing divine entities, fiends, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Introduced

Episode 3 ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the premier party of heroes who will separate from the main group to begin their own adventure, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

What Defines the Combat Party

According to the DM, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might look unsuited, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group understands precisely where to head next after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—used the foes for his own means, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a specific drive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and best friend, wants revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as important members in House Halovar could assist the party access places they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character swore a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander defied House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the clan.

This results in them no alternative but to head to the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

What’s Next?

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight cast members to round up the Seekers and Planners parties.

Viewers can anticipate finding out which players will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
