The artist has given the full amount of his £25,000 award cash to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the Britain's small live music spots.

Fender was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the best record of the past year.

The musician has decided to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages had in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to help thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

These funds helped locations that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties stemming from floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations received financial assistance in upgrading facilities and technical equipment that helped artists and audiences.

"The notion that money from performances in large arenas backs the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

The musician is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize funds to worthy causes.

In the band earned the award in the year 1996 for their release their work, vocalist the singer announced that the group would give their winnings to the organization War Child.

In 2002, artist she shared her bounty between multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked new equipment," the artist told the media.

In recent years, they gave their funds to the local youth club that nurtured their group, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was found to have the condition.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said singer Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory affected the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT announced it had rescued two small stages in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in the city and The Croft in the city were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is funded by a national body and supporters who buy "shares" in the properties.
